As Marty’s “Adult Creative Drama” workshop progresses over the summer, we see layers being continually removed from characters we thought we knew. Unfolding like a charmingly funny indie film, the group plays Marty's imaginative (and sometimes awkward) theatre games every week, but as their relationships develop, the games generate real-life drama. Circle Mirror Transformation, a comedy from playwright Annie Baker, landed on Top Ten lists of The New York Times and The New Yorker for 2010.
The Strawshop production is directed by Leah Adcock-Starr and features Sarah Harlett, Sharon Barto Gouran, Chris MacDonald, Raya Tuffaha, and Hisam Goueli.
Circle Mirror Transformation is a case study of strangers willing to take a chance and open themselves to the revelations, indignities, hilarity, and heartbreak of an amateur acting class in a community center classroom. In doing so, they transform the space into the anti-Zoom room; it becomes a quietly poignant reminder of the power of being present with one another, a reflection of the stories we share through the silliness and the silences, an open invitation to partake in the transformative and sublime power of play.
Circle Mirror Transformation premiered at Playwrights Horizons in October 2009. The play received Obie Awards for Best New American Play, Performance, Ensemble, and Directing; and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Director of a Play.
